Let's Think Differently about the New Year!

Authored By:
David Romanelli

I will save you the mumbo jumbo about New Years Resolutions.

On New Years Day, I looked in the mirror, 1 newborn baby, 2 bloody-marys and 3 football bowl games deep into the day...and thought:

“My wife is the one breastfeeding but my manboobs might just do the trick!”

“These moose-knuckle-high-waisted-dad-jeans are not going to further my image.”

“Dave! Yoga Journal is on the phone. They want you for their new cover,” said no one...ever!

Yeah, I got a little down on myself. It happens!

Intentions are more powerful than Stress

Authored By:
Christina Collazo

They say that there are a few events in Life that are top stressors.
In the last 12 months I've faced most of them!

But ~ I've never been more content.
Tired right now, yes! But content.
Intentions have guided this eventful year.

Family wise in the past 12 months,
I got married (Eloped with our 4 children in tow)
Said goodbye to Birdie, my sweet 14 year old four-legged fur baby
Sold a car/Bought a car
Moved our “stuff” into storage, moved the family to Venice Beach, CA for the Summer

About the Author:

Christina is a wholehearted care-giver, passionate mother, loyal friend and registered yoga teacher. She was introduced to meditation in grade school and has been teaching health/physical education classes since she was a teenager.

But it was when she began studying the art & science of Yoga 14 years ago, that she became aware of her potential to be(come) Love.

After years of teaching in & managing a yoga studio, she created Imagine Yoga to offer her unique style of workshops & events that include journaling/writing and intention setting. She has freedom to travel and be hosted by studios for all of her offerings.

During the week she is a Yoga Teacher/Mentor at Fusion Academy, a unique private school in Dallas and Plano specializing in one to one classrooms for grades 6-12. She is an advocate of sharing yoga + meditation + self expression for people of all ages and begins in her home, with her self, her children and recently blended family of (now) 6.

The only thing she knows for sure, she learned from the Beatles: Love is all you need.

The Beauty in Stepping Off the Mat

Authored By:
Noel Crane

We’ve all been there. Sitting on our mats in an open room surrounded by yogis with jars of green goodness, lotus tattoos, and exuding inner peace. They stinkin’ glow with the “inner light” we’ve been trying to harness for years by juicing, sweating, and pushing ourselves harder. It’s discouraging, it’s shaming, but if met with a dose of self-compassion and awareness, it’s a beautiful part of our process.

We as yoga teachers and practitioners are called to be seekers, not saints.

Mallory Trumpfheller, RYT200

The holidays are supposed to be filled with joy and celebration, right? But so often it can be tough to get in the spirit as you juggle a mile-long To-Do List and a full activity calendar, all while fighting the threat of getting sick. Here are 6 things you can do to help you stay happy and healthy this holiday season:

The Only Real Yoga

Authored By:
Alex Hamby

I'm holding a grudge. That's bad for a yoga teacher, right? But I can't seem to help myself as I walk through a class of women (and a lone, older gentleman) moving and sweating in time with the fast beat and thrumming base playing during their nightly Zumba class. Each of their faces look bright and happy, but concentrated and present as they follow the movements of the teacher.

I hear a buzzer, loud and sharp, and I look through a window down onto a basketball court. Below me teenage boys scurry back and forth chasing that orange sphere, working team against team to score points.

About the Author:

Alex didn't grow up a competitive athlete. He didn't exercise or eat right or meditate. He lived like most Westerners on a diet of television and McDonalds. Then one day he looked in the mirror and saw reflected there a man he didn't recognize and that guy looked sick and unhappy.

He made a series of changes that led to dramatic weight loss opened his eyes to what is going on around America and the world. After finding yoga Alex realized there was a tool, a practice that could help him and others make positive change and so chose the path to bring it to others. Now he celebrates and shares movement through yoga with whomever he can get onto a mat.

The Good Traveller

DeAnna Shires

Lao Tzu said, “A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” I would have called BS on the above quote until the day I lost control of my life wheel, while heading towards the life I thought I was meant to live. I had a plan, a good one, a solid one, and a fun one. I guess I got too cocky or maybe just a bit too comfortable because the direction I was heading took a major detour, then another, then another, until I was completely lost.

About the Author:

DeAnna Shires Nielsen, M.Ed. E-RYT 500 & Reiki Practitioner, has been studying and practicing various aspects of yoga since 1993. In 2005, DeAnna created the “Breathe Into Recovery” program for those healing from addiction and is a strong believer of Yoga for Emotional Healing and has been training teachers and offering workshops since 2007 through her “Breathe into Awareness” Programs. Always a student, DeAnna is currently studying Ayurveda and Vedic Astrology with The American Institute of Vedic Studies under he guidance of Dr. David Frawley (Vamadeva) and Yogini Shambhavi. Beyond asana that is approachable for all, DeAnna incorporates Ayurveda, Psychology of the Subtle Body, Pranayama, Meditation, and Mantra into her classes for a holistic yoga experience. Her playful spirit encourages laughter, exploration, and the freedom to "Bliss Out" and Just “Be”.
