I'm only in week 2 of my online "Mindful Communication" course given by Mindful Schools, and I already feel a shift in how I'm communicating with my family and co-workers. The foundation of the course is built on the Non-Violent Communication (NVC) technique founded by the late Marshall Rosenberg PhD, who also founded the Center for Non-Violent Communication.

Our teaching method is designed to be compatible with Social-Emotional-Learning (SEL) techniques including the implementation of life-long skills that promote self-esteem, self-regulation, self-awareness, stress-resistance, strength, flexibility, balance and focus.

Co-Founders, Phyllis Smith and Tida Chambers, have a combined 23 years experience serving the adult, adolescent and children community. Both are certified in children’s Yoga and have a lifelong passion to help empower our youth through the practice of Yoga and its principles.

All of our Yoga instructors share the same passion for serving this particular demographic and are certified with either a 200hr or 500hr Yoga Alliance-approved teacher training program. They are also trained in the LFY method, so each class is consistent.

Six years ago, I went to visit a friend from college who was teaching English in Kyoto, Japan.

A day or so after I arrived, she took me to an outdoor market in the city.  Wandering together through stalls of artwork, antiques, handicrafts and food, I was drawn to a table where a woman was selling daifuku, sweet rice cakes filled with red bean paste.

As my friend spoke Japanese and I did not, she kindly did the work of ordering one for me.

Ayurveda Basics – learning to understand, love and heal

The life science of Ayurveda explains that we are born perfect creations, with a unique balance of space, air, fire, water, and earth – the 5 basic elements of all things. This is our Prakruti. Then life happens, - the food we eat, coupled with our activities and environment skew that perfect balance. This is our Vikruti. Imbalance leads to illness, and when we can’t curb the illness, it can lead to chronic disease that we are taught to live with, such as arthritis, allergies, thyroid problems and inflammation.

Kirsten began studying ParaYoga in 2013 and was initiated into the tradition of Himalayan Masters in October 2014. She continues her training at the Himalayan Institute and as a student of the ParaYoga Masters program. She has earned specialties in Yoga for Anxiety & Depression and Yoga4Cancer.

My Relationship with Self-Care

A lot of what I do professionally centers around the concept of self-care. In particular, how to empower those I teach to take care of themselves. Everyone's self-care routing is as unique as their fingerprints. Even if two people need the same thing, the way they approach it and their reasons for doing it can be miles apart. There is a lot of dialogue around the why, what and how we should take care of ourselves - sleep hygiene, meditation, diet - but I feel there can be a lack of follow up.

Jordan’s yoga practice has allowed her to heal a number of emotional wounds that were affecting her everyday life. Years of dealing with ADHD symptoms, anxiety, and self-doubt have slowly melted away as she has spent more time on her mat, with her teachers, learning how to serve herself and others with this practice.

Yoga, to her, is an expression of self-care. We create our own medicine through taking the time to mindfully move our bodies. The physical postures we practice on the mat act as counterbalances to our days spent sitting still and rigid. On the mat, we can nurture qualities of strengthand softness to carry with us when we leave class. It is through yoga that we cultivate tools that allow us to mindfully move through the stress of our every day lives.

Jordan’s classes are crafted around nurturing the mind-body connection of her students through movement, mediation, and breath work. When Jordan teaches, her goal is to support a nurturing space for her students to cultive both sweetness and strength as they explore their personal practice.

When The Heat Is On

As I stepped into this tremendously hot room barefooted, I was carrying the stress and concerns of my world on my shoulders. My ministry & nonprofit initiatives were looking faint, business goals seem to have invited me into the galaxy in order for me to reach them, my finances moved out of my bank account home to reside in the accounts of bill collectors, and it seemed as if the world had slowly chewed me up, and spit me out like sunflower seeds.

In Search of Sattwa –or- The Evolution Revolution

The Bhagavad Gita tells us that humans, as well as all other things in Nature, have a mixture of Sattwa, and its companions, Rajas and Tamas. These three Maha Gunas (qualities) determine our behavior, actions, thoughts and emotions.

Sattwa is clarity, light, purity and wakefulness. It is stability, essence, compassion and love. Sattwa is required for our mental and physical health, and is the path to personal evolution and spiritual maturity.

Learning to sit….

1. Environment matters
Find a clean, quiet space in your home where you can sit undisturbed, away from the distractions and pressures of the external world.
The air should be clean, fresh and well ventilated but not breezy.

2. Cleanliness is a factor
Your face, hands and feet should feel clean and fresh, adding a certain respect and vibrancy to your practice. If you practice meditation in the morning, you will want to evacuate your bladder and bowels first.

Modern society is so super advanced - we can thank science & technology for so many inventions over the past 200 years! However, our personal and spiritual evolution, our ability to be content and fulfilled hasn’t growth past our ancestors from the Stone Age. We still exhibit anger, greed, jealousy, ego and insatiable desires. Our mind constantly spins with anger over past experiences, anxiety and fear over what may come to pass. We have lost sight of the beauty that exists, ever present, in the here and now.

Kirsten Joy began studying with Rod Stryker and was initiated into the tradition in October 2014 after retiring as a corporate finance executive after the death of her hisband from brain cancer. She studies under the tradition of the Himalayan Masters, and enjoys practicing Tantric Hatha Yoga, Vedanta and Ayurveda to support personal development and evolution. 

She supports her students' and clients' physiological and hormonal balance through Traditional Yoga, Meditation, and Guided Relaxation.
